Is My Dog a Candidate for Laparoscopic Surgery at Summit Veterinary Care?

If you’re considering laparoscopic surgery for your dog, you may be wondering: Is my dog a candidate?

At Summit Veterinary Care, we currently offer laparoscopic surgery for certain dogs, including laparoscopic spays and laparoscopic liver biopsies. But not every pet is a candidate – and the first step is always an exam and consultation with our veterinary team.

What Dogs Are Eligible for Laparoscopic Spay?

Our laparoscopic spay is available for dogs weighing 25 to 50 pounds.

For this procedure, we perform an ovariectomy, which removes the ovaries while leaving the uterus in place. Laparoscopic surgery allows us to perform the procedure through small abdominal incisions using a camera and specialized surgical instruments.

If your dog weighs less than 25 pounds, she is not currently a candidate for our laparoscopic spay.

We do not perform laparoscopic surgery on cats.

Why Does My Dog Need an Exam First?

Even if your dog falls within our 25 to 50 pound weight range, that doesn’t automatically mean laparoscopic surgery is the right choice.

Before scheduling surgery, your dog will need to come to Summit Veterinary Care for an exam and consultation. This gives our veterinary team the opportunity to learn more about your dog’s health, medical history, and individual needs.

We’ll discuss the procedure with you, answer your questions, and determine whether laparoscopic surgery is an appropriate option.

What About Laparoscopic Liver Biopsy?

Laparoscopic surgery isn’t limited to spays. At Summit, we also offer laparoscopic liver biopsy for appropriate patients.

Because a liver biopsy is performed for a medical reason rather than as a routine procedure, determining whether your dog is a candidate requires an individual evaluation. Our team will discuss your dog’s medical history, current condition, and diagnostic needs before making a recommendation.
