Introducing Laparoscopic Surgery at Summit Veterinary Care!

If your dog needs surgery, you may have heard the term laparoscopic surgery and wondered what it actually means. Is it different from traditional surgery? Is it better for your pet? And, most importantly, is your dog a candidate?

At Summit Veterinary Care, we’re excited to offer laparoscopic surgery as a new service for our Northern Virginia community. It gives us another way to provide high-quality surgical care while keeping your pet’s comfort and recovery in mind.

What Is Laparoscopic Surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique that uses a small camera and specialized instruments to perform certain procedures through small incisions.

Instead of making one larger incision to access the abdomen, the veterinarian makes a few small openings. A tiny camera allows the surgical team to see inside the abdomen on a monitor while specialized instruments are used to perform the procedure.

Because the incisions are smaller, laparoscopic surgery can mean less disruption to surrounding tissue and, for some procedures, a more comfortable recovery.

Laparoscopic Spay for Dogs

One of the laparoscopic procedures we offer at Summit is a laparoscopic spay, also called an ovariectomy.

Unlike a traditional spay, which involves a larger abdominal incision, a laparoscopic ovariectomy uses small incisions and specialized equipment to remove the ovaries.

At Summit, laparoscopic spay is available for dogs weighing 25–50 pounds.

If your dog falls within that weight range and is scheduled for a spay, our veterinary team can talk with you about whether a laparoscopic approach is appropriate.

Laparoscopic Liver Biopsy

Laparoscopy can also be used to obtain a liver biopsy. A small camera allows the veterinarian to visualize the abdominal organs, while specialized instruments can be used to safely collect tissue samples for evaluation.

A liver biopsy may be recommended when your veterinarian needs more information about what’s happening with your dog’s liver. Getting an accurate diagnosis can help your veterinary team determine the most appropriate treatment and next steps.

Is Laparoscopic Surgery Right for Every Pet?

No.

At Summit Veterinary Care, we believe in recommending the right procedure for the right patient rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

Currently, our laparoscopic surgery services are available for dogs weighing 25 to 50 pounds for laparoscopic spay procedures. We do not currently perform laparoscopic surgery on dogs under 25 pounds or on cats.

If your pet doesn’t qualify for a laparoscopic procedure, that doesn’t mean they can’t receive excellent surgical care. Our team will discuss the appropriate surgical approach for your pet and make sure you understand what to expect.
